The colour temperature of 6534K is excellent, and the gamma average of 2.15 is reasonably close to the 2.2 ideal. To get one with a specification to match the BenQ will cost you closer to £600 or $800. Acer announced the first IPS screen with this new panel, the XV272U X, and LG is supposedly working on a similar model with HDR 600 support. 27" 2560x1440 QHD 16:9 HDR IPS 2K Gaming Monitor, Wide gamut space with HDR and FreeSync for smooth gameplay, The Best Video and Audio Quality on a Gaming Monitor, "The colours are absolutely wonderful and a genuine joy with the monitor's HDR being good enough to be an experience-enhancer. For punchier contrast, better HDR or specific gaming features, however, you’d be better looking elsewhere.

The contrasts are lovely and the tone of each colour is rich. There’s a 5W subwoofer paired with a couple of 2W speakers.

The speakers require a HDMI connection to function, but the monitor supports HDMI 2.0 so that shouldn’t be an issue.

And the design choices can be a dealbreaker, especially those who want easier access to USB ports. It also has a manual low blue light filter mode in the settings, as well as lots of other eye care options in the onboard menu. A good specification and eye-catching looks may be a draw, but the BenQ EX2780Q is more limited in some practical areas. The 1ms 1440p offerings from MSI, LG, Gigabyte, ASUS’s TUF range, Viewsonic or the Acer Predator screens are better suited for that crowd. However, such a display will not only be more expensive, but it will only work well with a smaller and more expensive range of graphics cards. The experience is better once the BenQ is set up. But another key feature is monitor design. Learn More, The BenQ EX2780Q is a decent mainstream option thanks to solid colours and great speakers – but it's inconsistent elsewhere.

In practice, HDRi is inconsistent.

At its core, the BenQ is a 27in display with a 2560 x 1440 resolution.

Obviously, you’ll get more detail on a 4K display. However, it’s worth bearing in mind.

It’s not using the fast IPS or nano IPS technology that’s popped up in newer 144Hz, 1440p panels like LG’s 27GL850-B. The BenQ uses AMD FreeSync 2, which means it works flawlessly with both AMD and Nvidia graphics cards. In its HDR modes, the BenQ reaches a peak brightness of 465 nits, which means it outstrips DisplayHDR 400, but that brightness level is still a long way short of the best HDR displays. AU Optronics, one of the main manufacturers of the LCD panels, began mass production of 27-inch and 32-inch 240Hz IPS screens at the start of this year.

I’ll touch on the speakers more in a second, but what stood out to me the most were the other elements of the design. Design could be as something as simple as how easy a monitor is to put together out of the box, how accessible its ports are on the back, or the layout of its OSD.

BenQ's EX2780Q ($599) is primarily geared toward gaming—with a 144Hz refresh rate and support for AMD's FreeSync technology—but this 27-inch … The screen can’t be rotated into portrait mode, which makes a difference if you’re looking at the EX2780Q as a second screen.

Get past the crisp text and the minor colour issues, and HDR games and movies do get a boost on this display – there’s a modest improvement to contrast and colours, with bolder shades at the top end and better depth at the bottom of the gamut.

Its HDR options are underwhelming, its uniformity is inconsistent, and it offers few adjustment options. Beyond this, the BenQ suffers.

Privacy Policy. But where it differs is with a small ridge between the top edge of the monitor and the bezel. Mike has worked as a technology journalist for more than a decade, writing for most of the UK’s most well-known websites and magazines. That gap is actually large enough that gunk can get trapped in the space. Unlike some of the newer chassis from Samsung and LG, the EX2780Q has all of its IO mounted vertically in a little cubby to the right of the monitor stand. But it’s one of the biggest things that impacts what it’s like to live with a product, and it should be just as important a feature as refresh rate, DCI-P3 support, or screen size. BenQ’s auto-adjusting technologies might also not be appreciated by those who would prefer a 2.1ch audio setup with more power, or screens that have more versatility with height adjustments and USB ports. And things are going to get even more competitive. Two minute review The BenQ EX2780Q is a $599 (£449, about AU$860), 27-inch gaming monitor that starts with the fundamentals, like a 1440p IPS panel refreshing at …

The speakers are some of the best I’ve used on a gaming monitor. Samsung’s QLED technology isn’t far off either. That IPS panel is a mainstream choice, and other areas of the specification also reflect this mainstream leaning. He has written for ABC Technology & Games, games.on.net, PC Powerplay, Techly, Gizmodo Australia, Lifehacker Australia and more. An added bonus is that BenQ’s sRGB mode doesn’t lock out options in the OSD settings.

This display isn’t the best option if you’re really interested in HDR, though – it’s still an IPS panel with a relatively weak backlight and relatively underwhelming contrast levels. There’s one minor downside to the colour situation.

BenQ EX2780Q, a 27-inch 1440p IPS Freesync Premium screen, BenQ’s ZOWIE line also has a string of 240Hz screens.

HDRi uses a sensor built into the monitor to adjust the colour, contrast and picture based on the ambient light in your room. The BenQ EX2780Q is at its best when handling mainstream duties.

When I unboxed the EX2780Q, there was a couple of hairs that had lodged themselves into the gap. The BenQ is one of the only small gaming monitors around to pay attention to audio. Still, it’s definitely worth keeping the future of screens in mind. Elsewhere, the BenQ has some of the best speakers I’ve heard in a monitor, alongside bold design and a remote control.

Two HDMI 2.0 ports – one DisplayPort 1.4 connection and a USB-C port – are fine for display connectivity, but there are no extra USB ports and that USB-C connector doesn’t deliver power. Bundled remote. The BenQ’s IPS construction also impacted on its HDR performance.

That’s the headline feature of the BenQ EX2780Q, a 27-inch 1440p IPS Freesync Premium screen that’s targeted as an all-around productivity screen with 144Hz refresh rate support. The joystick and buttons on the rear are snappy and sturdy, and the BenQ also comes with a remote control.

The BenQ rendered 99.9% of the sRGB colour gamut and 95.3% of the DCI-P3 colour space, which means this display can produce virtually every shade required by conventional and HDR content.

If you’re in a room that attracts a lot of dust, with a window facing or adjacent to a major street, you’re going to have to be more judicious when it comes to cleaning your monitor than you might ordinarily be.

There’s no price or availability on those screens, though, and it’s a moot point if you’re hoping to buy something before the end of the month as a home office tax-write off. Samsung’s entry-level 240Hz monitor last year had a rotatable power plug, which while not fully rotatable, was a hell of a livesaver for the power point placement in my apartment.

And choice always means two things: better prices, and more impetus for all companies to continue innovating and revising their designs.

Across all three modes, text is so sharp that it looks pixellated. The BenQ EX2780Q hits this sweet spot, combining them with support for Adaptive-Sync, VESA DisplayHDR 400 and some BenQ-specific …
